Paper vs Purpur vs Fabric vs Forge: Which Minecraft Server Type Should You Use?

Plugins or mods? A simple guide to Paper, Purpur, Spigot, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Vanilla, so you pick the right server type the first time.

Every Minecraft Java server runs on a “server type” (also called server software). The one you pick decides one big thing: can you use plugins or mods? You can’t mix both on a normal server, so it’s worth choosing right at the start.

The short answer

  • Want plugins (SMP, minigames, economy, ranks)? Choose Paper.
  • Want mods for a modpack? Choose what the modpack says: Forge, NeoForge or Fabric.
  • Want the pure game with nothing added? Choose Vanilla.

Plugins vs mods

Plugins run only on the server. Players join with a normal Minecraft client, nothing to install. Plugins add commands, ranks, protection, shops and minigames, but they can’t add new blocks or mobs.

Mods change the game itself: new blocks, items, dimensions and machines. Every player needs the same mods installed, usually through a modpack launcher like CurseForge or the Modrinth App.

Paper: the best default for plugins

Paper is a faster version of Spigot. It runs almost every Spigot and Bukkit plugin, fixes many lag problems and has lots of performance settings. If you’re not sure, start here.

Purpur: Paper with more switches

Purpur is built on Paper and runs the same plugins. It adds hundreds of extra settings, like rideable mobs or tweaks to game mechanics. Pick it if you like to customize gameplay without extra plugins.

Spigot: the older choice

Spigot is the base Paper was built on. It still works, but Paper is faster and runs the same plugins, so there’s little reason to pick Spigot today.

Fabric: light and modern mods

Fabric is a lightweight mod loader that updates quickly to new Minecraft versions. Many performance mods (like Lithium) and modern modpacks use it. Fabric servers can also run some server-only mods that work like plugins.

Forge and NeoForge: big modpacks

Forge is the classic mod loader behind most big modpacks. NeoForge is a newer fork that many packs use for recent Minecraft versions. Always use the exact loader and version your modpack lists.

Vanilla: the official server

Vanilla is Mojang’s own server. No plugins, no mods, just the game. Good for a small group of friends who want the pure experience, but it has fewer performance options than Paper.

Can I use plugins and mods together?

“Hybrid” servers try to run both, but they often break with updates and can be unstable. For a server you want to keep for a long time, pick one side: plugins or mods.

How much RAM do I need?

  • Vanilla or Paper with a few plugins, small group: 4 GB
  • Paper with many plugins or a growing community: 6 GB
  • Modpacks: 8 GB and up, 10–12 GB for big packs
